I made this record in 2018. This was during my first major trip back to Nigeria. I vividly remember
promoting another song “Contagious,” which brought me to Lagos at the time. LeriQ produced “Drown”
but it’s one of those records that I actually mixed, and I felt good about it because I didn’t want
a perfect mix. It’s just as raw as it was when I recorded it. It was inspired by a love interest. I
think I was having a lot of sex at that time, and to be honest, this was just the way I was feeling.
Being in the studio and reminiscing about a moment that I had over and over again with that special
somebody inspired the lyrics of the record. Also, being in Nigeria, that’s where some of the
language came from. I tapped into my pidgin and my Nigerian essence on there. A lot of people wonder
why I never made visuals for “Drown.” I was in the middle of so many things when I released (the
project) “Love Is Contagious”. At the time, “Blow My Mind” was happening; there were a lot of
distractions, and the fact that I was changing teams, changing labels, and all those different
things kind of prevented a cohesive energy around me to really push the song the way I really wanted
to. It's quite unfortunate, but these things happen a lot in the industry. It is one of those
records that people still fell in love with beyond my expectations, even without a video. It’s a
blessing. Part of the plan was to make a video for it but changing teams and labels happened after
the project dropped. It kind of put a dent into the marketing and the energy of the project, and I
ended up going into (another project) “I Love Girls With Trobul” right after that, so everything was
overlapping. “Blow My Mind” was happening, “Sweet In The Middle” was happening, and everything else
took off, but it’s still such a special record. I get so many people telling me that it’s one of
their all-time favourite songs from me from different parts of the world.
