E Go Better

Tony Tetuila

Ever since we started as a country, things have been getting harder. Back then we thought we were seeing the highest, we

didn’t know it was going to get worse. People are really hungry out there, we must say the truth. I just thought,

instead of condemning the government, how about we just pray? That’s how I came up with the song. “E Go Better” just

explains the way people were living and the way the economy was looking. I wanted to talk about it but without

condemning our country but also let the leaders know that they have to give us what we deserve. It’s about hope.

My Car

Tony Tetuila, I...

The whole story about “My Car” was so funny actually. My first album “Morning Time” had the hit,

“Omode Meta”. People already knew me. They didn’t even call me by my name, they just hailed me as

Omode Meta. There was one particular day, I was driving through Maryland (Lagos) and a Danfo (bus)

driver actually hit my car from behind. Before I could say anything people were like you’re a star

now. Omode meta. Leave it alone, forgive him. So I was covered with shame and decided to leave the

bus driver that hit me. Some months later, the same thing happened and that day, pepper no rest for

my pocket (I didn’t have a lot of cash). People started hailing again “Omode Meta you’re a star,

leave him alone”. I just said to the guy that hit me, look, we have to split the cost half and half.

It was a Mercedes Benz 200. After everything, as I was heading home with my crew I just started

singing what became the chorus “you don hit my car, oyinbo repete, grammar repete”. So I built on

the idea with some of my friends then when I got to the studio, I met with Pasto Goody Goody

(featured artist), he was working at the studio that day. He said he wanted to try something on the

song and I said go ahead and he came up with the bridge “somebody wey, somebody wey”. The song came

out and it was boom! The first person that called me was the governor of Lagos, who is now the

president of Nigeria. Of course Tinubu didn’t hit my car, that last verse was just a playful twist.

He was nice about it, we had dinner at his house after he called and he welcomed us.

Omode Meta

Tony Tetuila

Omode Meta is really like a beef track. It was so sad leaving my group (The Remedies - pioneering

hiphop music group consisting of Eedris Abdulkareem, Tony Tetuila and Eddy Remedy). When I left

them, it was a challenge for me and that really built me, it made me stronger. I started doing all

my choruses. I give it up to my friends, Blackface, 2face, Azadus, they were really there for me.

Whenever I had my choruses, I used to go to Festac (Lagos) and we'd hangout together and build on

ideas, especially Blackface. So I thought about the ancient Omode Meta folklore and said, let me

change it to my own story about my experience with my former group. “One said he wanted to rap, one

wanted to sing and one wanted to dance. Meanwhile, the ones that wanted to sing and rap were trying

to push away the one that wanted to dance”. It was a beef song so I invited my friends Ruff Rugged n

Raw and Plantashun Boiz and they spit fire on it as well.
